what should I look into, and do?

I dropped my laptop about 16 inches onto hardwood floor.....When I turn it on, it makes 3 beeps over and over. The power on light will flash 4 times, over and over. The screen only makes a flash for a milisecond just as it tries to start.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

First step would be to reseat the memory, 3 beeps is an error letting you know the computer is not reading the presence of the installed ram. reseat it and let us know.

Screen flash can be another indication of no memory detected.

Thank you for your response! I waited for lap top to cool. took out batt., opened up memory and removed the 512 mb memory and reinstalled it. Powered it up...no change.

A couple of other observations I made were....the lap top had been on lights flashing the sequence over and over with no screen response for a half hour or so and it was warm. Not unusually hot or anything, but "normally warm" to the touch. I had tried to reset the pram in past attempts and at start up you can hear the hardrive (?) "spin" Like I had a cd in it or something. There is no cd in the cd player but you can definitly hear a SWOOOOSH start-up. I assume the hardrive is working.....rrright?

I think I got it...comment/not answer.

I did as you said...no difference what can I try or look into now?

Open it and look for disconnected cables or loose parts.

Good Luck,

'''

1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable

''' In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
