How do I troubleshoot my display problem?

I have followed the guides, got the part numbers, replaced the inverter board and display.... Still no dice :( I'm out of luck and could really use some advice. Thank you!!

First thing to do to is to try to isolate the problem. Hook it up to an external monitor and see if you get anything. Next put it into Target Mode by hooking it up to another Mac via a firewire cable and start the iMac holding down the "T" key and run disk utilities on the the hard drive from the other machine.

Mayer, Thank you for your help! The machine will not send a signal to an external monitor OR boot in target mode... What should I do next?

Also, on the main board I see two of the four diagnostic LEDs lit when powered on, if this helps.

Which LEDs are lit?

Numbers 1 & 2

This indicates that the power supply is fine. I guess there is a problem with the GPU or other vital part on the logicboard. Check for leaking or bulging capacitors. Sometimes a reflow of the GPU helps. If there is enough demand i might write a guide to this topic, done it a few times successfully.

I believe your log in name is very misleading on this site and infers an authority you do not have unless you represent Corporate Apple. Please change it to something that is less deceiving.

I think you need to give some sort of justification for your advice "Apple". Are there no other troubleshooting tips you could give first??????

@Mayer

What do you mean by a reflow of the GPU?

This may solve my problem.
