Usually they just need a good cleaning with a q-tip and some alcohol.

the ball is sloppy loose, so that ball doesn't track smoothly

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

sounds like the balls are in a retracted position.

Wash ball with soap n water, dry thoroughly and rub some candle wax (birthday candle) on trackball. Replace ball and move ball in holder in different directions until ball moves freely.

This was magic!! So so smooth now. I wish I had known this years ago as I love a trackball mouse.

UPDATE: Soy Wax got a little gunky; probably why the slick scroll didn’t last long. HOWEVER, one application of DRY OIL and the trackball is still smooth! This product is for hair and I’m sorry that I can’t recommend a more common alternative. Just in case you ever come across it: https://a.cl.ly/5zuBEBJO You only need like 3 drops

Soy wax has a very low melting point. Paraffin and beeswax may be a better wax for it. I would try a little silicone spray and polish it off before replacing the ball - I plan on trying that myself. The silicone coating should also help to keep the ball a little cleaner.

Eyeglass cleaner - the type with some kind of silicone whatever that fills in small scratches - leaves the ball and bearing-nubs almost too slippery. Sadly, wears off quickly, so flattened nubs will have to be replaced with something. Thinking maybe nylon screws, with ends filed or carved into points
