Why is my computer going to sleep mode?

Recently my iMac has started to enter sleep mode whenever I am trying to play games or run programs that are resource hogs like photoshop and iMovie. I have tried resetting the PRAM, and the SMC. I have also cleared all the vents and made sure it is properly ventilated on all sides. This is super frustrating as this has been a great computer and I am not ready to get rid of it just yet. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Many things could be going on here..

If you’ve already performed these:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Then the next thing that I’d look at is attempting to run a full Apple Hardware Test.. for this model, I think it’s a 2009 you may need your original 2nd disk, but you can google that..

Another thing to look at if all that passes is your repair permissions under disk utility..
