Here's how to do it but it uses and ATA drive not an SATA and I don't know where you can find such a drive. It will however, that the 12 mm thick drive.
Search for a ATA100 (IDE) 5400RPM Hard Drive or better

Will the A1052 support an external SATA drive that I can use as a startup drive?
Sure if the connection is a USB to SATA.
