Is there a trick to separating the 2 halves of the shell on the headset?

There is glue securing the shell to the device, so slide a prying tool around the edges to try to weaken the bond. Eventually you should be able to pull/slide the two halves apart, which requires some force. Refer to our HTC Vive Outer Shell Replacement for more help.

What no one is saying is that there are 4 screws holding the shell on. This might depend on the model. those two tiny "sensor" holes on top and bottom are actually Phillips head screws. I broke one when I was taking apart my vive, after struggling for over an hour. That is how I found out. once I losened the other three the shell came right off.
