iPhone 6 will not charge with certain chargers

I have an iPhone 6 that's being very picky with chargers. I have one OEM Apple lightning connector that charges the phone fine. However, it refuses to charge when connected to anything not OEM. We've tried 3 aftermarket chargers and the phone will not even show the red battery on the screen. The port on the iPhone 6 port is cleaned and free from lint and debris. The same aftermarket chargers work fine on my 7 Plus so the chargers are not broken. Any ideas why it would have this issue?

Apple released a standard for charging accessories called "Made for iPhone". You'll often see this logo on packages when you shop for accessories. Specifically, this standard ensures there's a chip in the cable that stops a power surge (in basic terms) from blowing out components on your phone. Repair shops are being inundated with repairs for the U2 Tristar chip that gets damaged when using aftermarket, cheap cables.

https://developer.apple.com/programs/mfi...

You can still buy a non-OEM cable however it must be "Certified Made for iPhone (MFi)". This chip costs about $3 to manufacture, so any dealer selling you a cable for less than $5 is probably selling you cheap knockoffs that will ruin your phone.

For what it's worth, iFixit sells certified charging cables at a reasonable price here: Lightning to USB Charging Cable

Okay, I'll try that. It's for someone I know and the cable she bought was $30 (From what she tells me), surprised to see that they charge that much and it's not MFi?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

That is surprising. But high cost doesn't always equal quality. My hunch is someone made out on that sale by selling a super cheap charger at many times its worth.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

That doesn’t explain though why the same charger cable that won’t work on my iphone will work on my son’s or wife’s who have the same model or later than mine.

My problem is different and NO ONE yet can figure it out. I can NOT charge my phone with any chargers made by Apple. I've tried 11 (3 I have, family and friend's). No matter what cord I use, it will not charge with an Apple white charging block. It will charge with several of the aftermarket 2 outlet chargers (regardless of the cable being Apple or aftermarket), it will charge with SOME USBs (20 % of the ones I've tried), it will not charge in my Sentra's USB but will in my Ram USB with the same cord. It will charge with my laptop, but not my wife's laptop. I even walked by an HP printer in a hotel and it would charge by the USB port on the printer, but not the computer or wall USB port right next to it (with the same cord). This problem is only 2 days old on a 2 year old phone. Apple can't figure it out and I can't find anything online about it!

Same problem. My phone stopped charging with a number of chargers, ALL said they were made for iPhone - the last one I even bought AT the Apple store. Someone gave me a cheap knockoff charger and it worked, it was great - then my rabbit chewed through it last night, and again none of my other, certified cables will charge the %#*@ thing. Never had this problem with androids, and it’s obviously not the port as the one charger did work.

I noticed it started doing that after I upgraded. I Believe that there is a bug however slight in the upgrade that has not been detected or identified officially. Because when I upgraded again it went away as though it was never there. They’re making these products too fast they need to dig up jobs again. He was meticulous.

Read an article a while ago that said there has to be a certain amount of resistance between some of the pins on the cable or Apple devices will not charge and you’ll sometimes get the message that the device is not compatible even though it is.

So I’ve used combination of Apple cables non-Apple cables and different charging devices. iPhone three will not charge but iPhone 4 does. iPhone six and 8 won’t charge unless it’s got a Apple certified cable on one device but charges fine on other usb chargers with non apple cables.

I can charge my iPad and my iPod 5G on charge ports which the iPhone 6 and eight and three won’t work on but 4 will.

What article says on what pins you need to have a certain amount of resistance in order for it to work with Apple devices. maybe somebody else can find it.

On one USB charger iPhone 6 and eight won’t work but I can plug them into another USB port with a non-Apple cable and it works.

Usually this is worn out charging socket pins.

To fix that you need to get the charging port replaced.

Worst case scenario it would be a charging chip replacement.

I bought another cable and it works with that one. I don’t understand how it would be a physical problem with the phone when it charges fine with some cords but not others?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@rabbitbinks This is due to contact surface area. Your pins in charging port from factory are perfectly gold plated. Your charging wire from factory will be perfectly gold plated.

Over time the gold plating gets scraped off with the friction of pushing together and pulling apart the connectors.

The pins in the phone jack are sprung and can over time sit slightly off centre and so the contact area is lower on top of worn gold plating.

To top it off the pins also go dull because of contaminants like oil from your fingers, dust and lint getting into the charger port, any liquid settling on the pins say if you left your phone on a counter when you shower or cook and then there is outdoor weather like rain or mist or just general humidity.

If you have a microscope use a non-metallic implement to lift out as much dust and lint as possible. If you have dental brushes used in place of floss, you can possible brush debris from the pins in the port.

Use an eraser and/or a fibreglass pencil for the cable pins.

I had an Android, (Moto e4 plus), that had the same issue. It wouldn't charge one day with either of my charging cables. Then I went to the phone shop, and he gave me a Samsung charging cable. That worked, yeah, it's something about the quality.

I have the same issue right now. I had issues charging my iPhone 6 just this week after I transferred to my iPhone 13. I still want to use the my 6. None of my lightning chargers fit the port. The SAME exact chargers that were working before the transfer last Saturday. How could they fit on Saturday during my transfer and now none of my chargers work?
