The areas on the screen that are unresponsive seem to be straight lines across the display directly where the 'send' and also the 'space' buttons appear when typing a text message. Could this be a problem with the LCD, the touch-glass or both?

Dear Rioch,
As you still get a clear picture of those spaces, it looks as if only the touchscreen glass is concerned.
Do a hard-reset of your phone (holding Power and Home buttons simultaneously until you see the silver apple on black background appear), just to confirm that you are not looking at a software glitch.
Then head over to the Parts section of iFixit to get either a Front Panel (35$) or a Front Panel Assembly (70$) depending on you fixing skills.

Thanks for the reply Ronny, I had already done a hard-reset and it didnt fix the problem, are you saying its possible that this could be a software glitch? If so what indications would there be to show that it could be a glitch? Also the front panel had been previously replaced on this phone as it had been completely cracked.
Well if it were a software glitch it would go away and resume perfect fuctioning after the hard-reset.
For instance, taps on my iPhone 4 are sometimes off by 1cm or so, but closing the concerned application or hard-resetting the phone always solves it for me.
If it has been replaced previously, there might be a chance that the connector simply is a little loose...

Just try to resettle the connector.
If that doesn't get you any further, I am afraid you need another front-panel replacement.
If you are lucky, your replacement is still covered by warranty...
