Spilled tea on laptop

Hi all,

My girlfriend spilled tea on her macbook.

She turned it off soon after and let it dry for half a day before trying to start it.

It didn't work. Then she put it on the charger and first it didn't show it was charging (the light on the charger), but at a second attempt it did. It still wouldn't start though.

Here I took over. I removed the battery (like so: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012 Battery Replacement) and let it dry for two more days. It was soaked when i took it apart.

After reassembling it it, it doesn't charge. When i try to start it, it however does show the 'no battery' sign on the screen (which i interpret as quite a good thing).

My question is, is it possible that the battery was damaged by the water and is it smart to buy a new battery? or is it more likely that something else was damaged and should i give up?

First of all, stop trying to turn it on. Take out the logic board and follow this guide:

Disconnect the battery and do a full inspection of the logic board (take it out) following this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement.

Once your sure the logic board did not get wet or if it did you've been able to clean off the spillage fully using 85% or better isopropyl alcohol and a soft toothbrush and check to make sure no components look burnt.

See if you can get it to work with the battery disconnected and only having the MageSafe adapter plugged in. Is it able to come up at all? If not you likely need a new logic board and battery.

The MagSafe adapter should be bright Amber in this condition. If not you know the charging logic is damaged.
