How to diagnose the damage on the motherboard?

Hi,

My Phone stopped turning on after charging all night.

I sent it off fore repair but the repair centre simply said the motherboard is damaged, is there any way to diagnose which component is damaged? I heard about using a multimeter to diagnose the problem. How would i go about doing this?
