mini USB connector charging port replacement

Hello intrepid phone fixers. I wish I had better news for you. I recently had the failure that many people have had with the EVO 4G charging port. The manufacturer makes an overall very cool thing, but sadly they got this part... WRONG. See, there is this pad of copper with little bumps of solder paste that is supposed to BOND to the underside of the main body of the micro USB shell. Unfortunately, during thermally profiled IR reflow at the factory (think conveyor burger broiling machine) the part does not heat up sufficiently and is not in intimate enough contact with this pad, so there is no BOND. Inevitably, without this intended support, the little legs to the side and back fatigue from repeated connector insertion, and then the rear contacts fail. I was able to repair this flaw using an $800.00 Metcal soldering iron and 30+ years of daily soldering experience, including lots of surface mount. It was... extremely difficult for me to create what I believe to be a lasting repair. I had to do it twice! This included challenges such as the vibration motor only leaving 1/8" clearance or so, and getting solder out of the inner part of the connector after using that surface to melt that needed BOND. I also had to pre-tin every desired solder surface, because the original solder is a travesty material. Real lead/tin solder every time, gents and ladies! While I encourage people to build their skills whenever possible, I consider it highly unlikely for someone who is doing such a project for the first time to be able to pull it off. Find someone like me who has done such work their whole life and tip... generously. :D

ell what I noticed that the original part has a manufacturer. I am going to look for it online when I get a second. I work all weekend. Day and night doubles. So if you have the original part. Also look up on youtube. Usb replacement on a computer. Some guys explains it very well. Although it is for a computer. Helped allot.

Go to you yube and enter htc evo digitizer repair. That will help you with three disassembly. I guess first you should read on the usb port the manufacturer. You need the exact same part. I tried with very very similar part. It didn't work. When you find it. It has to have the tips that connect tio the mother board stick down so they go through the mother board easily. After you find it use you tube look under fix mother board. And go from there I only used a hot iron. And the wick looking part. Got it at radio shack for 3 bucks. The hot iron for ten.

Jerry, how did you do the soldering of the port with the vibration motor in the way? Did you remove the motor first, and if so, what procedure did you follow?
