How to diagnose an electrical problem?

I recently got a 1982 fa50 thats been sitting for at least 3 years. It had been out in the open on its side for who knows how long. I cleaned out gas/oil tanks, new spark plug, new battery, air cleaner, carburetor, changed gear oil, and fixed a petcock problem. It now runs GREAT. Goes super fast and has no problem with leaks, randomly dying on me or anything like that.

HOWEVER the problem now is that the electrical stuff like the turn signal lights and horn etc. aren't working very well. They're just very weak and inconsistent. The speedometer and the tail light aren't working at all. The headlight and brake light work fine but get dim when I put on the turn signal. This was not a problem until after I got it running well. I tried to see if the battery needed charging but the needle on the charger didn't do anything, so I guess it doesn't need to be charged?

Before getting this scooter I was totally new to all this small engine/scooter repair and I have limited experience in electrical maintenance. So any good advice will be helpful. Thanks.

@zc4140 yes you do want to charge your battery or at least test it. This should still be a battery that has battery acid as electrolyte. So be careful with that. Open the caps on top of the battery and check to see if it has proper fluid level. The cells should be covered. You can measure each cell with a voltmeter. Place the negative probe on the negative contact and gently dunk the tip of the positive probe in the electrolyte. All six cells should show the same voltage. Remember that this is a six volt system.

If the battery is okay you do have to check the voltage on the magneto coils and your voltage regulator.

I solved this problem. I had identical issues. After a new battery failed to fix I got a new non sealed beam headlight. Didn't fix anything but needed one anyways… I then checked the blinkers because they did not blink and were very dim! In all blinkers I found somone had put 12v bulbs, replaced with 6v8w bulbs and now my blinkers worked again. Found out all my grounds had bad connections. Like really bad. In headlight case , under gas tank they added another ground that was loose. Probably added because they are not original blinkers that are not just 1 wire. Fixed grounds and while under the seat I checked all connections. Found out that a yellow stripe I think (maybe orange with stripe) wire comming from stator harness was barely connected. Fixed that and seen a little improvement. Finally the last thing I Fixed that was the cherry on top was that the blinker relay in headlight housing had gone bad. Not to mention, a 12v blinker relay at that! Perhaps causing electrical issues. Get a new 6volt blinker relay. Now all my lights are bright and working well even when I hit the brakes all because of a blinker relay. And because I hooked my stator back up I no longer needed to manually charge battery. Hope this helps someone. Grounds, wires connected??, correct bulbs and blinker relay! Walah. P.s. adjust the bolt very slowly on horn while somone is holding the horn button. If you don't hear a beep no matter which way you turn it then get a new 6v horn. $10-$20 Amazon. Treatland has a non sealed beam for fa50s. I bought a p15d h6m led bulb that works great from Amazon. Leds work with their beam. Make sure they are 6v though

Update to my personal issue with fa50s lighting issue. All lights work except left rear blinker and running brake light. Brake light works when break is engaged. And yes I checked all the obvious things like wiring and bulbs. I'm guessing it's time to check those grounds once again. Most likely came loose again. Previous owner rigged all wiring and added additional ground wires for blinkers that came with 2 wires instead of 1 wire per light. Ugh. — Danelle Merritt

Firstly you will have to check the Battery by a digital multimeter. You can use analog also, but it will be heavy and may not give you the actual result. Then check the voltage with multimeter.

If okay check the coils and regulator. You will find error any one f these.
