What do you see when you start-up while holding DOWN the "option" key?

Update (05/01/2017)

Sounds like you have an "open firmware" password.

BLANK SCREEN..IF I RELEASE OPTION AND WAIT THE LOCK-BAR-AND ARROW APPEAR...THEN IF I USE ARROW OR SPACE BAR THEY DISAPPEAR AND TEXT APPEARS ASKING FOR PASSWORD---WHICH OF COURSE i DO NOT HAVE....NOT THE CORRECT ONE AT ANY RATE. IF I WAIT A FEW MINUTES THE DRIVE BEGINS TO ACCELERATE....SOMETIMES DRAMATICALLY...NOT ALLOWING ME TO TURN UNIT OFF...MUST UNPLUG IT.
