Why does it stop on starting windows for even a day?

More details, Please. Did you replace or add a hard drive. Is the hard drive identified in BIOS (hit F2 on start up when you seen the Dell logo)? What version Operating System are you using, is it Home, Professional, 32 bit or 64 bit? Are there any error messages?

@mm2 , matutu moses , Just a thought: If the hard drive has not worked since you put it in and you do hear it running, perhaps the OS did not install properly and you may want to try a reinstalling the OS. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.
