Why is my touchpad not working - locks my Surface Pro 3

Hi there,

Every time I touch my touchpad (which usually acts as a mouse) on my Surface Pro 3, my screen turns off. It doesn't shut down the whole tablet, it basically just locks it. The mouse icon might move slightly with my finger, but after about a second my screen goes black. I can touch a key on the keyboard to turn the screen back on, and log back in, but if I use my touchpad again the same error happens. So my keys work fine, but my touchpad does not.

I tried to toubleshoot this and held the Power and Up volume buttons for 10 seconds, when I saw a factory re-set type of screen the touchpad worked fine, so I know that it does still work.

Can anyone help me with this? I know I can just touch the screen instead of the pad, but I'm so used to using the touchpad, I'd love to be able to use it again!

Thanks!

I'm having this same issue! If I use my usb mouse i'm fine but if i start using the keyboard's mouse pad the screen goes black like you. Same thing! Have you found a solution?

I had this too. Was about to throw the thing away. But unbelievably after a month of pain a simple hard reset sorted it. Just hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds till the machine does a hard reset and keyboard should be fine again.

Howard, you are wonderful. I found lots of complicated answers and yours was simple so I tried it first. And it worked. By the way, my Surface Pro 3 is 9 years old and thanks to you I do not have to buy a new Surface Pro today. Cherin

I had the same EXACT problem and seem to have fixed it by updating to the latest Windows updates. To manually do this go to Settings>Update and Recovery and then on the Windows update page click "Check now" to check for the latest updates. Once it finds some, click "Install". Once it's finished, reboot the surface pro and it should work.

This has happened 3 times to me now. Have to attach the keyboard and after doing the MS update, the problem cleared up. Thank goodness.

Thanks for your responses.... I actually managed to fix the problem completely by cleaning the connectors between the screen and the keyboard with an alcohol wipe. Definitely going to remember that for the future!
