40 GB Not reading discs?

The PS3 will not read discs. It will take the disc but will not read them. Not sure if it is spinning. Do need to replace the drive or clean it?

Does it read anything? CD's, DVD's, Blu-Ray Movies, or Games? If it isn't reading anything, you will need to replace your PS3's laser (But not the whole drive itself, as the drives are "Married" to the motherboard/console that they came from)
Use this guide to get your drive out of your console, this guide to change the laser, and one of these (or one like it) to replace it.

Well it seems I am in a tough spot. Nothing at all no spinning or reading at all. So I need to replace the entire drive? DOES THAT require soldiering anything?
Thanks for the help and saving me a lot of money!!!
before you replace i would try cleaning the laser off with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol....if it works you just saved yourself some money

There is no soldering required to replace the drive...that being said as chirs(above) mentioned it is a must to change the circuit board on the bottom of the drive because that circuit board and the motherboard are paired together and the drive will not read discs if it does not have the correct circuit board attached. good luck and i hope its not that drive board thats messed up or you are definitely in a predicament
Good Luck,
Cody
You can tell if the disk is spinning by noting the orientation of the disk when you insert into the PlayStation. Then, on the XMB, check to see if the little loading wheel is in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If it is, press the eject button. If the disk came out in the same orientation that it went in, then you should first try cleaning the lens. If it still does not read any media, then you likely have a faulty lens.
If there is the loading wheel in the top of the screen, and the disk comes out at some different orientation, then you likely have a disk issue. Try a different disk. If that doesn't change anything, then try the method previously described for a faulty lense.
If there is no loading wheel in the upper right hand corner of the XMB, then you likely have a faulty daughterboard. If that is the case, you are in a tough spot, as like Chris said, the two boards are "married" together.
Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

Thanks everyone I have been very busy with exams this week. I am done for good. I have graduated!!!!!
Anyway Great feedback I hope to try to fix it later this week.
Any good place to get a Blu ray drive? Just Ebay?
Does it have TO BE A certain one?

there are two different types. one for the slim and one for the older fatties. if you go on ebay they will say which they are for. just make sure if you are getting a new drive to switch out the circuit board on the bottom of the drive because each one is specific to one specific motherboard.
Good Luck and congrats on the graduation,
Cody
