Or for a temporary solution, get a white piece of printer paper and put the phone face down and just rub the ball against the paper. Some (or most) of the crap will come off and get onto the paper, thus cleaning it.

Clean ball with drug store alcohol and cotton ball.

just replace the ball, it pops in and out, use tweezers or a small flathead screw driver
