The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

Force Touch trackpad replacement calibration?

Do you have to do some form of calibration after a force touch trackpad is replaced? I've seen this mentioned in forums, but there's no information on how this is done.

I've not worked on the newer Force Touch trackpads yet. But, from my observations I can't see why you would need to, let me explain...

The older Trackpads have a mechanical action, the bottom edge depresses when you depress the lower part to create the click action. With the newer Force Touch there is no mechanical movement for the click action.

OK so whats this calibration all about? Looking at this older MacBook Pro trackpad we can see the click plate adjustment screw (Tri-Wing or Torx). This allows you to make sure the bottoming of the click plate enables the electrical contacts of the click (left & right).

The calibration makes sure the force sensors in the haptic trackpads respond to the appropriate amount of force. They may work without calibration, but often they respond to either to much or too little force without being calibrated. An uncalibrated force touch trackpad can respond erratically, sometimes causing it to register unwanted clicks, or to not register them at all.
