Guides for the Wi-Fi version of the iPad Mini 2. Announced October 22nd and released November 12th, 2013. The iPad mini 2, also known as the iPad mini with Retina Display, has all the pixels of the iPad Air in a smaller 7.9" form factor.

Difference between front panel assembly and LCD?

My iPad Mini 2 with retina works great, but for about a year now it has had a cracked screen. The crack is a clean break across the face of the center of the device.

Now I'm on iFixit trying to get a replacement, but I don't understand the difference between the front panel assembly and the LCD screen.

Which one do I need?

The picture on my iPad is crystal clear and all pixels work fine. The only problem is that the glass itself is cracked. Do I need to the pricier LCD screen, or will the front panel assembly do just fine?

Thanks,

Martin

Front panel assembly is essentially just the digitizer assembly, the touch screen layer which is fused together with the glass.

The LCD is not required however if you can separate the LCD from the housing of the iPad Mini without breaking or damaging it.

I recommend looking at this guide for reference at least:

Thanks for your response. From what I understand from your reply, all I need is the front panel assembly, but ONLY if I can remove the inner LCD display from the front panel without breaking it.

How can this be done? Is it difficult to separate the front panel display from the LCD screen without breaking it?

The LCD isn't glued together with the glass in any way.

It is actually stuck to the metal iPad Mini housing with adhesive.

The hard part is actually separating the LCD display panel from the iPad Mini itself where there is glue usually all around the edges of the LCD which are sticking to the metal plate under the LCD.
