Grayscale printing consumes color ink

I only use grayscale printing but the color inks get dry too. I put a tape on the nozzle to prevent the ink from being used. The printer still says empty even if the cartridge is full. How can I make the MFC printer function using the color inks only when I need to?

hmmm

i would think, the colour cartridge gets use because every time you power your printer up, it clears nozzles off any excess ink.

other than that, i cannot think of anything else...
