Why does nothing happen when I move my fingers across my trackpad?

HP Compaq Presario V6000

This is a, 35.70 cm (L) x 25.70 cm (W) x 2.54 cm (min H) / 3.96 cm (max H), notebook PC the unit weighs 6.6 lbs. It was released in 2006 and comes standard with a 80 GB hard drive.

Why does nothing happen when I move my fingers across my trackpad?

When I try to move the indicatory across the screen it is either jumpy or doesn't move at all. I have to press my finger down hard on the trackpad to get any response.

I've tried to restart my computer and do a reinstall on my hard drive but it doesn't seem to do me any good the problem has stayed the same for about a month now.

Any help would be awesome.

You may just need to go into the trackpad settings and adjust the sensitivity or you may need to reload the drivers . does the laptop work ok with a usb mouse attached?
