Starter relay location under dash

1999 Volkswagen Jetta, got a starter relay, took out the panel below the dash but, can't figure out where it goes.

Still can't find the location. The numbers don't match and neither do the prongs.

@deviousdawny , is the security light on, your problem also could be safety neutral switch, ignition switch faulty, did you find and replace the relay, etc.

Turn ignition to on position and shift to neutral and try and start and then slam the gear shift back to park and try to start, If this works the safety neutral switch needs adjusted or replaced. It may be time to have a good technician to have a look, diagnose and estimate repair. Good luck.

@deviousdawny , I also got thinking about the relay you purchased and was thinking perhaps the parts store could of errored and gave you the wrong part.

Dawn, 1999 Jetta neutral position switch or the starter interlock relay is up under the dashboard on a panel full of relays, may have to remove the lower dash trim. Should see it through the gap between the fuse panel and the dashboard.

Jetta equipped with manual transmission, the relay position is third from the left on the upper row and auto transmission equipped, the relay is third from the right on the bottom row. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

I'm having the same problem I'm thinking it's the starter relay and I pulled out the glove box to access it cuz it says it's supposed to be behind the glove box but I don't see it

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Well the instructions were wrong about where the starter relay was at in the car I probably would have found it over there behind the glove box if I had a stick shift but I have an automatic so it is on the driver side I found the relays but now I can't identify which one is the starter relay I keep trying to search online to see if I can find out which one is which but I'm having a hard time getting the answer anybody out there have an answer for me

Dawn I realize that you asked answered your own question. But you picked a poor answer (your own) as a solution. If you don't get the answer you need, it is best not to accept an answer as people then stop looking at the question. Try unaccepting this answer and clarifying your question to get something that actually fixes the issue.
