This can also happen with a manual transmission and a worn clutch (slipping). You'll have to provide more information for a diagnosis. What engine is in the car? What type of transmission? It sounds like it is something slipping inside the transmission. I'm afraid you'll need to find a good mechanic and have them look at it.
