After screen replacement, tablet shuts down when connected to usb

I replaced my Nexus 7 1st gen's cracked screen. Powered it up just fine, but when I connect the USB, it crashes. I have to unplug and then reconnect the battery to get it to reboot. This feels like a hardware issue, but don't know where to start. Any thoughts?

I think I have narrowed it down to something to do with the ribbon cable. I cannot get my computer to recognize the tablet or play sound through the headphone jack, either. Could this be some type of grounding issue?
