It sounds like your cooling system is struggling at low speeds when there’s no airflow from driving. A few things to check:
- Cooling fan – Ensure the fan activates when the engine reaches a high temperature. If it doesn’t, inspect the fan fuse, relay, and wiring.
- Coolant level – Low coolant can cause overheating, especially at idle. Top it up if it’s low (after the engine is cool).
- Thermostat – A sticking thermostat can sometimes work on the highway but fail to open fully at idle.
- Water pump and belt – If the belt driving the water pump is loose or slipping, coolant circulation at idle will be weak.
Since it cools down when you turn on the heater, that points to a circulation or cooling fan issue. Start with the fan operation and coolant level, then move on to the thermostat and pump if needed.
