The two best options, as it turns out, are 1. Just pull really hard, or 2. Use a screwdriver to pry it open.
Here is a YouTube link that shows how:

I went down the screwdriver route. Many thanks for the suggestion.
Simple once you know how. Hold BOTH ends of the remote, squeeze both ends gently and slide forwards

I agree. Sometimes, the new plastic pieces have micro texture edges resulting from the fresh cutting from the making of the pieces that give it a bit of a grip against each piece to where you will need to use something that allows you grip it better, like rubber gloves, or even a rubber band. I too had serious trouble opening it the very first time. I used latex gloves to open mine once, after that I could open it easily with bare hands. If you put a rubber band on your thumb and push it open that way, my bet is that it will open for you.
Latex gloves worked - still have to push hard - Thanks
The person who designed this remote should be fired. Seriously.

Couldn't agree more. It's totally ridiculous for such a sophisticated device to be missing a little notch to open it easily.
I received the Amazon fire stick remote today, and took me quite a while to figure out the best way. Every time I press on the indent and move it up it opened a teeny weeny bit, and not any more. So finally, I pried it open a little and put in the batteries

Phew! Ridiculous! Took suggestion from YouTube & used rubber jar opener to gain traction while pushing down-still very tough!
Watched a video on YouTube with a very simple trick that works great. Turn the remote over so the little arrow is pointing up. Grip it firmly in your hand and hit the end firmly on a hard surface. If you do it right, the back cover pops right off. I got it off on the first try.
