Laptops manufactured by Dynabook (formerly Toshiba). Toshiba has since transferred 100% ownership of the laptop business to Sharp.

Win magic Data Security Removal.

Yesterday I bought a laptop from the market. They were like giving electronics at very high discounts. I saw a Toshiba Laptop there decided to buy that. The laptop was password protected with "WinMagic Data Security". The person told me that this security issue will be resolved once I install a fresh windows in Laptop. But since I have brought the laptop home, I have tried installing Windows several times but always ended unsuccessfully. I am unable to install a new windows and that Security thing is still there, asking me to enter the user id and password.

I cannot return the laptop. It was sold clearly on No Exchange/Return Policy.

Please someone help me out here.

Please.....

Thanks.

@benjamen50 you have any idea?

The hard drive has been encrypted with SecureDoc, the only fix is a password and key. This is more then likely a laptop that belonged to a business. MOST businesses either remove or wipe hard drives before they go out for sale, or a refurbisher.

But I don't have a password, niehter did the person had who sold me.

So I was being fooled when he said that Windows Installation will resolve the issue....

@lscs yes this is a laptop as stated earlier.

Just a question* You said Businesses either remove or wipe out hard drives before they go out for sale. SO WHY WOULD ANYONE BUY SUCH LAPTOPS IF THEY CANNOT BE USED??

@ssvirani you cannot use the laptop without replacing the drive. "WinMagic Data Security" encrypts the drive and since you do not have the proper "key" password it is not possible for you to decrypt it. At minimum you have to replace the drive to make the laptop workable. You asked this "SO WHY WOULD ANYONE BUY SUCH LAPTOPS IF THEY CANNOT BE USED?? in your comment and probably can answer it best. You bought it like that because it was inexpensive. So the seller sold it because he/she still made money of you. Greed and dishonesty are the most common attributes for this type of deal.

@oldturkey03 Thank You for the reply.

Actually at first, I was not aware that this thing was ONLY related to the hard drive. I just thought the laptop was locked and just it! It couldn't be opened unless password is available! And yes if its the issue of hard drive, I really hope it is, than this laptop was worth buying because:

* It was inexpensive.

I'll buy a new drive tomorrow, and see what's the issue.

Thank You,

Hello, after so much time, were you able to solve the problem by changing the hard drive?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@emmanuelasd check the comments under teh question. No, a new hard drive did not fix it. The software locked down the BIOS as well.
