The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

Hi does anyone know what this "220" chip is?

Hey everybody,

My wife decided it was a good idea to throw my MacBook Pro 13" Early 2015 A1502 ECM 2835 Mother Board on the ground (I've only had it for two weeks).

I powered it ON and it works no problem.

I shook the computer and I heard something rattling.

When I opened it up, I noticed 15% of the "220" chip's top shell corners chipped. However the "guts" of the actual chip is still intact. It's just the top shell that's damaged.

My questions are: What is this chip for? and Should I replace the motherboard?

I was thinking of super gluing the chipped pieces back on, but it's pretty touch to get the chipped pieces back on just right.

Like I said the Mac powers back ON and works fine, but it bothers me to know that this "chip" is chipped (pun not intended).

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

I think you would be fine leaving it the way it is. Inductors/coils are pretty tough. I would just put a drop of super glue on the exposed portion to protect it from getting electrically damaged.

@paulll that is a "fixed inductor" with values of 22UH 20% 2.4A 0.105OHM and it is a DEM8030C series. A Murata 1273AS-H-220M=P3 should be a match. Double check on here. It is part of your backlight circuitry.

Since your computer still works, the damage to the inductor may (for now) only be cosmetic

Hey oldturket03, I got three words for you:

YOU DA MAN!!

Your exactly right and more.

I superglued the backlight fixed inductor shell back on April 26th. Today isJune 8th, 2015 and been using my Mac everyday for about 8 hours (excluding Sat and Sun) and still working great.

I still haven't bought a replacement inductor yet, but thanks to you and the link you've provided, I will be ordering it soon. I always love my stuff in great condition and knowing that the shell is broken really leaves me unsettled. So I'll be fixing it soon. Thanks again!!
