2.2 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz), 2.5 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.7 GHz), or 2.8 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 4.0 GHz) quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 6 MB shared L3 cache and an optional AMD Radeon R9 M370X dGPU.

Can I replace my mid-2015's SSD with my mid-2014's SSD?

I am curious if the SSD in the Mid-2014 mbp was the source of the 2x speed boost, or if it's the architecture from the Logic Board? I have a Mid-2014 15" with the 1TB apple drive and I would really just like to change them over and continue working on projects without having to use Migration Assistant or other methods.

Thanks!

Sorry No the SSD's are not interchangeable. The speed difference is due to the number of lanes the newer system has:

  • Mid-2014 - PCIe 2.0 x2 Lanes interface)
  • Mid-2015 - PCIe 2.0 x4 Lanes interface)

It sounds like you have a smaller SSD in the newer system. At this time there are no SSD upgrade possible by third parties

There are a few different ways you could move things around here. Have you looked at getting an external drive? How about going with an external SSD drive like this one: Samsung Portable SSD T3. We bought a few and are finding them quite nice (USB3).

If space is not the issue then how about using a sync app to keep the data files mirrored between the systems. Here's one we use: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/file-syn...
