Microphone and Earpiece not working in-call, unless loudspeaker on.

Hi

I have inherited a second-hand Note 3. During a call the earpiece volume is very feint and the person on the other end of the phone cannot hear me at all (akin to being under the sea).

When Loudspeaker is put on, everything works fine.

I have completed a factory reset, I have checked all settings, I have performed all updates. Nothing seems to work.

Is this a case of changing the components? Are they linked together on the board?

Update (03/22/2016)

Thanks for that.

I have completed a tear-down and found that the earpiece was blocked with brown gunk - likely to be dust and sweat. This has rectified the issue with the earpiece.

What I can'y understand thus far is why the Microphone works in Loudspeaker Mode but not in normal mode.

Do you have any idea why this would be?

For this issue there are parts you can replace. The front earpiece speaker which is together with the headphone flex cable assembly. For the microphone, the issue you're having points to the bottom microphone which is behind the charger port daughterboard.

Make sure you buy the correct model of the phone part as if you get the incorrect model for the charger port daughter board, you will have issues with reception and sometimes charging the phone.

Where to get the part. If this one doesn't match your model, then search for the one with the correct model no.

After stripping the phone, and a few Google Searches, the culprit has been filth from the previous owner.

To rectify, a fill tear-down was undertaken in which I was able to remove the filth from the earpiece speaker and from the grille internal.

A pin was then used to clean the microphone hole at the bottom of the phone. Should a pin not be readily available, a staple is thin enough to clean the hole too.

Once cleared, this resolved my issues with the phone.
