Trouble syncing with itunes

My iPod Photo/60 GB won't sync up my music in iTunes. iTunes "sees" my iPod, as the correct iPod, but there is a red circle with a red line through it on the iPod's picture. I am using iTunes ver. 12.1.3.6 (which Apple told me to use) which works with a newer iPod Classic. When I attempt to sync my iPod Photo with my (Windows) PC in iTunes, I get a message: Syncing iPod, then immediately it says: iPod sync is complete - but no files are transferred. Windows "sees" the iPod as my D drive and it is formatted. Can anybody help? Thanks
