How can I get my photos off my phone

HTC desire 500 - it got smashed screen and wet, now won't turn on, orange light flashes when I try to charge it and if I plug it into laptop to try and down load photos the laptop can't even see device... I don't have back up or SD card. Is there anyway to get my photos off or do I put this down to experience?
