i was driving for a week with the little
battery symbol drawing flashing in red
and after the battery was completely discharged.
a red icon came up on my dash board it is a box with water and an arrow pointing down what does this mean

Check the belt on your alternator. Check the cables from the alternator. Use a multimeter to test the alternator.

Check all your fuses and battery connections, and the charge state of your battery itself. If it's a new alternator, then the problem is somewhere in the fuses or wiring.

It is not hard to do. Anyhow, your symbol is the low coolant (antifreeze) Make sure the engine is cool before you open the cap and top-up the cooling system.
Check your system for leaky hoses, leaking radiator etc.
