The 1998 version is based on the original Beetle but, in comparison with the old model of the vehicle, it is way more spacious and equipped with more advanced features.

Trunk will not open at all

I have a 2003 VW Beetle Convertible. The trunk latch is broken. I cannot open the trunk with remote or key. I opened the rear seat to gain access to the trunk, reach my arm in and the latch is broken. I know this because when I pull on the latch mechanism, it's frozen, will not move at all. Any suggestions on how to get into trunk when latch is broken in the closed position?

It's a really tight fit. In fact the only way I can work on the trunk from the inside is with one arm reaching into the trunk area, rest of my body outside on the back seat. I discovered a round (almost invisible) cap of sorts inside the trunk below and to the right of the emergency release level. From the article you attached I see that this should be another release (a more effective one). I will try it later today. Thank you for the article.
