This little plastic part could be actually bought for around $10 from a seller on eBay. But looks like it is out of stock now.
The replacement part number is 1K684-884.
This is exactly what I ended up doing, since I couldn't find a replacement part anywhere online. As I am not an experienced craftsman, it took me about two hours of fiddling around with the metal scraps I had at hand before I managed to chip and file a part that resembled the plastic one sufficiently.
I couldn't find a replacement part anywhere online, so I decided to make one myself. As I am not an experienced craftsman, it took me about two hours of fiddling around with the available metal scraps before I managed to chip and file a part resembling the original plastic one. I had to create dozens of design iterations until it fit. You also need to disassemble the camera to reach the part that needs to be extracted and replaced. It was pretty exhausting! This is what it looks like in the end:

Its crazy when you buy a £600 camera and it is ruined by a tiny plastic retaining clip.

They make everything so cheap nowadays. My Coolpix was fine, then one day that little piece of plastic broke too. I was putting a fabric band aid on it to secure it but it does not hold too well. Who wants to stick and un stick a compartment all the time. Everything today is made so it will break and you will buy it again. These manufacturers know what they are doing. It is all a money game. GREED!

Hi,
i'm living in Germany. Same problem with that yellow/orange clip here.
I've sent my Nikon 1J1 to an autorized Nikon Service repair shop. They have that part and it costs 4 Euro, but they can't sell it to me without a repair fee and they have to clean the camera professionally (54 Euros) . Which is joke, because the camera was clean. The overall cost estimate incl. shipping and tax was 69,50 Euros. What a joke.
I told them that they should send me back the camera without doing anything to it. Will look for a broken camera to get spare parts from.
