The iBook G3 was unveiled in July 1999 as Apple's portable computer for consumers.

What do I replace the original thermal materials with?

I am reinstalling my recently repaired logic board in my G3 900mhz iBook 14". The original thermal heat transfer materials on the heat sink were two preformed squares, the larger was a blue foam looking square, the other smaller one was gray and seemed to be a more solid version and consistency of thermal paste. Can I use the normal Arctic Silver paste for the installation or do I need to find the same type of original squares?

Thanks,

Randy

Arctic Silver Thermal Paste will work great om the heat sink in your laptop.

Thanks. Do you have a recommendation for the thickness of the paste? The iFixit instructions say to spread a thin layer. The original materials were fairly thick, maybe up to 1/16th of an inch.

My experience in the matter is that it's better to have a bit too much than a bit too little. You just really need to make sure you don't have any that comes out over the edges / spills out when you reapply the heat sink. 1/16 " sounds fine to me, I just like to make sure I can't see the processor any more through the thermal compound.
