Wife is upset because her phone is stuck in speakerphone mode

A few days ago I replaced the speaker in my wife's iPhone because it wasn't working. Since then, any phone calls and facetime calls can only be done in speakerphone mode. when you try to turn off the speakerphone nothing happens. It's in a constant state of "unable to make a private phone call" as I have come to call it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the great answers, especially yours Mayer I'm definitely taking that advice to heart LOL! After careful inspection what I found was that the ground prong on the speaker assembly at the logic board was bent when I installed it and not hitting the case. As soon as I rectified that the phone works fine. I had actually skipped a few steps trying to hurry and didn't pay attention to that so take note everyone.

Never repair anything for your wife, have a professional do it (even if you do it, tell her a professional did it). Years later, after it has worked well you can fess up, meanwhile you don't have to take her abuse.

Go to settings, accessibility, call audio routing

Let us know if that was the issue!

Although this did not happen to be the issue with Chris's phone it was with mine (an iPhone 5SE that was defaulting to speaker with every call). The one modification I would add is that the sequence of key commands is settings>>general>>accessibility>>call audio routing. Sure enough, when I followed your excellent advice my call audio routing was set to "speaker." I switched it to "automatic," made a test call, and rejoiced. Thank you!!!!!

It is quite possible that dirt and corrosion are the source of your problem , not the speaker. Try replacing the dock connector.

Blew compressed air into the headphones port and it turned off “headphones” mode.
