ac clutch will not draw back in on its own.

When the ac clutch releases to the out/off position it looks to be kicking out farther than it should and it will never reengage. If I turn the car off and pop it back in it will work fine, until it shuts off again. I was told that the ac compressor on my model and year doesn't have to be completely changed, I can just change the field coil. I was also told that I could just unscrew the bolt attaching the clutch plate and pull it out and remove a pin of the post that would keep it from releasing too far for it to be drawn back in. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Bill

Bill, what make and model are we talking about here?

It's a 2001 Mazda Protege with the 1.6L engine. Sorry, I thought this posted to the thread on this make and model car.
