Announced September 9th, 2014, this device is Apple's first foray into smart wearables. iFixit's repair manuals are applicable to Apple Watch (steel) and Apple Watch Sport (aluminum).

Diagnostic port pinout information?

Do you have any information about the pinout of the Apple Watch's diagnostic port? I have heard from good sources that its pins correspond directly to six out of the eight pins on a lightning connector.

Any idea based on the wiring which pin is ground, which one is host power, etc?

There are no circuit diagrams leaked, because this thing basically has zero reparability and those guys didn't even bother.

Basically, the companies that already made accessories for this have the info you need. My observation from the Apple instore units is that the pins port out to a magsafe power and lightning data connection.

It doesn't have zero repair ability. The problem is how much these parts cost, compared to how much the device is worth. For another $50 you can get a brand new one

So it has 6 points on it? MagSafe is 5

At the Apple Store the units connect to a clip that allows them to be updated via a lightning cable and powered.

The Watch's actual pinout is Lightning, not MagSafe. 2 pins for power. MagSafe has more pins because it is reversible.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

So basically it's a lightning connector? But lightning has 8 connections and this port on the watch has 6.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Yes, it's lightning. Two of the lightning pins are unnecessary here (the ACC_ID and ACC_PWR pins are for powering and identifying accessories).

If any of us were able to make a cable with it, what would we be able to do except charge it faster? Would iTunes ever detect it? A Apple tech told me only iPhones would be able to flash WatchOS, not itunes. But that kinda seems stupid.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

There appear to be several services running on the Watch which should be accessible over USB, including AFC (iTunes file access). I have heard that you can flash the Watch via USB, but Apple does not publish the IPSWs for it so this won't be useful to users like us. For what I'm interested in (development), having USB access to the Watch could be very useful. I made a cable but was unable to get it to work properly.
