First try starting up with the "ShiftKey" held dow (safe mode).

Boot up from your system installation disk. Go to the second pages pull down menu. Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the drive. Restart and see if your problem is gone. This kind of sounds like an old extensions conflict. What was the last thing you downloaded and installed before it started locking up?
