Hi- this is a great guide, thank you. I have this unit, and the usb charger port broke off. Is there a way to install a new charging port?

yes, the port was just to keep it charged.

do you still have the connector ? - the important part is to find the right contacts on the cable/connector
I do not have the connector, and am not sure what even happened to it. I suspect it came out attached to the charging cable and fell off. If another could be re-soldered on to the board, I'd have to buy one somewhere (Radio Shack??)
The problem I have is, I am not sure if there are more than two solder points... There are two to the right of where the usb sat on the board, but I can't tell if the usb socket also had any other contact points on the board
The solder point you mentioned are only the points to fixate the connector - it has no other use than this. the original soldering points are teared of the baord - look at those brown lines - those have been the original points!!!
Mine just got totally torqued from lateral abuse. I don't suppose there's a way to find the part (like iPods) without perhaps buying a non-functioning unit somewhere? (I actually don't like it that much, but it worked OK.)

a shot from the top would have been better, but i think that i've seen this tight - the circuits are gone, they are teared from the board - you will never be able to solder there anything on it.
sure you can try to find the corrsponding parts for the missing circiuts and solder the contacts to those parts - but that is not an easy task

See second photo, it's about the best I can get with my iPhone- not perfectly clear...but maybe a bit better than the first.
I think you are probably right, I suspect my daughter or someone else who used the gps was a bit too rough with the usb cable. There are two solder tabs to the right side that I was wondering about- but I suspect there was some other tiny circuitry that ripped off with the usb female piece- so it may just be history. Thanks, I really appreciate your time and help.

it's really bad - but as i said, if someone has the time and knows something about those things - maybe he would be able to fix it. was the port only for the charging process ?

easy bill, there are surely some guerilla techniques than can help you charging the device. but that is your decision - maybe you should sell it on ebay ;-)

I presently have 12 of these with the same problem. Those where the mounting contacts(traces) are still attached to the pc board can be reattached by careful cleaning and soldiering with a very low heat pencil iron(15w max). Very tedious.Once the remount has cooled add a drop of super glue jell to the board and connector.
Those as in the pictures above follow the traces back to large contact points, clean an area bare,soldier 28aw wire to the cleaned area and to the corresponding connector contacts.Using an old USB cable saves the frustration of trying to soldier to the connector.

Very easy to fix it to charge just splice into the red and black wire that come out of the battery worked fine for me

If you hadn't ripped the contacts, you might have been able to solder it back on, but this is pretty bad damage so unless you replaced the entire board, there's no chance.
