Why wont my screen work when I turn it on?

I have an early 2006 iMac 17 inch intel base. It runs and runs great as long as I have i hooked up to another screen. can this be repaired by me and @ what cost?

since you can see the picture on an exteral monitor, it's not a graphics processor problem.

is the screen totally blank or can you see a faint image ?

sometimes the backlight inverter or the backlight itself dies - but then you should see a faint image on the screen (especially when you use a flashlight and hold it close to the screen).

Is it a grey screen? Just stays black? Or just is blue? If its black it means there is probably a problem with the connector cable going to the screen or logic board.

If its blue or grey it means its stuck starting up in which case it a problem with your harddrive or logic board.
