Loud clicking noise when vacuuming (not in the upright position)

My Dyson DC14 makes a loud clicking noise when it is in the vacuum position. When it is in the upright position it does not make this noise. I know there is a series of steps that can be taken to reset the unit. Does anyone know the procedure? Thanks!

If your Dyson vacuum is emitting an unusual smell, see the Dyson Ball Animal Emits Unusual Smell or Noise problem page for possible causes and solutions.

I just fixed my DC14 which was making a loud noise when vacuuming. The noise would stop with the handle in the upright position. I could resume vacuuming for a short period of time and the noise would start again. I cleaned all of the hair and junk off of the roller. This helped some (for a while). I checked the Internet and found information saying the clutch is probably bad. I also found a Youtube video on changing the belt. I took the bottom plate off by turning the three locking screws. Then I removed the roller. This was a pain since the belt was not broken. While holding the end pieces of the roller, I was able to move the roller, but it did not turn freely. I removed the end pieces by pulling them straight out from the roller. There were dust and lint packed in this area. After removing the dust and lint and putting the ends back on, the roller turned freely. I put everything back together and . . . NO NOISE! I hope this will work for you.

Fantastic! I was going to replace our DC33 but now it is as good as new. I found the roller axle was a little bit rusty in the middle when I pulled it out. I cleaned the rust off and gave everything a little oil. No noise! many thanks for this tip.

In addition to the clean-up of the hair, string, threads, wires, and who-knows-what that gets routinely tangled around the brush bar, every now and then a more intensive clean-up is needed. This is not in the manual, but eventually the debris can tangle around the spacer in the brush roller end cap creating enough friction to melt the roller and make it stick.

I made a guide for how to clean that out here: Dyson DC33 Brush Deep Clean

You've probably got something jamming the brushbar.

Unplug the vacuum and tip it on it's side and have a look at the brushbar, you may be able to see what's stuck and remove it.

More than likely the brushbar will be clogged with hair and this is jamming it up, I use a craft knife to cut through all the hair on ours to free it all off.
