Cant Activate iPhone 4 Error 0xe8000004

Okay, so I have an Iphone 4 that I KNOW was working. I switched phones and gave my old phone to daughter's boyfriend. He opened an account with the same provider, I know this phone is not jailbroken, nor is it a provider issue. When I stopped using this phone I wiped it to factory, and nothing has been done to it since.

I do know the wifi is not working on this phone, but it was activated in the past without wifi and worked fine (just expensive).

I put in his SIM (SIM has been tested in a working phone and works fine) but once connected to Itunes to complete activation the error in Itunes reads "The Iphone could not be activated because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000004). Please try again later."

Please help!

I fixed it!!!

Step one, down graded the IOs by following these steps to the letter http://www.geeksn0w.it/GeekGrade/downloa.... I had to do it twice ans 5.1.1 was too far back and failed, but 6.0.2 worked great.

Step 2, activated phone through Itunes.

Step 3, did an update to current software using Itunes to get rid of the tethered boot.

Works like a beauty - except for the broken wifi, but that's another issue for another day!

Hello, i i have managed to downgrade to 6.1.2. Tethered boot, am wondering if i upgrade via iTunes just like you did will i encounter the error again. I have read in other forums and most guys say its a hardware problem with WIfi and bluetooth. I don't want to do the downgrade again since its a tiring process. Did you upgrade work on the latest itunes or 11.0

Keep trying, check out my solution at the bottom, I am on iTunes 12.4.1.6 but used iTunes 11 with patch for the pwned downgrade and iPhone 4 is now running stable on iOS 7.1.2 don't give up! I tried to get it to work for over a year now so it is a very exhausting process but not all is lost, the 3Gs new bootrom story is much more complicated but I might have the solution one day

Thanks it worked actually, am on 7.1.2 i just upgraded to latest iTunes then i chose update instead of restore. No errors on activation it passed all the steps. Bluetooth and wifi cant be activated which is a hardware problem. If fixed everything can work.

sorry I'm not the best in this... but to be sure before I follow the steps: when I make the downgrade to iOS 6 or 5 tethered and then I activate my iPhone 4. Can I upgrade using the latest iTunes and I won't get the error again? Or I have to be on iOS 6 for ever... thank you so much

@matimillan29 yes you can update to the latest iOS 7.1.2 with the latest iTunes version 12.4.1.6, everything should still work :)

If wifi is greyed out then phone will not activate even tho it says connected to iTunes it still won't accivate because of the greyed out wifi. Until Apple stop signing firmware for the iPhone 4 I'm afraid it's bricked til then

I don't even see the wifi - its coming from a new set up - all that is visible at the top of the screen is "no service" and the battery meter.

Would downgrading the firmware help with this issue?

You can downgrade but if the shsh blobs weren't saved then you will have to downgrade to a teathered jailbreak..

It's possible to do but will take a while as numerous programs are needed on a laptop

OK guys since y'all know your stuff I will let you know I have FINALLY just FIXED mines after oh so long, reading through all of your methods & issues, well turns out that it is a hardware over software issue so after downgrading, upgrading so many times after another as you have probably done so already, I noticed that WiFi will come and go every time I booted on the latest version iOS 7.1.2 & of course I tried to activate it since I know it was unlocked already but still iTunes came back with an error that there was something wrong with my iPhone & to take it to a service center which some of you might be familiar with already, so since I noticed that WiFi coming & going I decided to leave it on my favorite iOS 5.0.1 GeekGrade .ipsw and so happens today I tethered booted but WITHOUT SIM CARD & SIM TRAY everything came back WIFI +CELLULAR+ BLUETOOTH :D that is what has just worked for me hope it helps anyone ;)
