Upgrading ram to 16gb

I have a MacbookPro 5,4 and I have maxed out the ram at 8gb. I am also running OS 10.9.4. Is it possible to upgrade my mac to 16gb of ram? And if so are there any negative effects that this may cause to my macbook pro?

If this is your machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (SD) Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2009 15" - MC118LL/A - MacBookPro5,4 - A1286 - 2324*

It cannot be upgraded past 8 GB of RAM.

it depends on your motherboard maximum memory that can handle most MAC before 2012 only can use 8GB

but here's a useful article that might explain things to you

http://www.cnet.com/news/add-16gb-ram-to...

and What you need to know is adding more memory is 100% safe to your system in worst cases your computer won't recognize the extra memory witch means you wasted money for nothing . But you need to know how to do it first because you might harm the mother board if you touch it with static charges

Hope I Helped
