forgot name and password for login

Had troubles with this ibook crashing and gave up and now 8 months later I cannot remember log in name and password. Have bought parts for it from ifixit, new frame and feet prior to setting it aside frustrated. Starts up sometimes to log in screen, then shows window 'hold power button to restart' and over and over will not end. Ran very hot before these problems. Is logic board bad?

Start up from your original system installation disk, go to Utilities, go to change password. Run Disk Utilities on the hard drive next.
