If one of the answers fixed your problem, you should accept that answer. Thanks!

This is an add-on to Josh's answer but a different answer:

Well, different laptop manufacturers have different add-ons to the ctrl panel, and if you ever reformatted, chances are you don't have these options anymore as the software is not installed. Try installing a mouse software (I know Lenovo has one) or the general app suite

Thanks Gabe&Josh,

you gave me some ideas about reformating. I found synaptics and downloaded the device settings for the touch pad and it solved my problem. I can enable and disable OK now. Thanks for the help.

John.

With Windows, I believe that if you go into the Control Panel and open the mouse preferences, you can tell it to ignore the trackpad when a mouse is present. Try that out. :)

Update #1

Okay, is there a separate trackpad toggle somewhere? I know that with some PCs, the trackpad has its own set of preferences and controls.

Hi Josh,

I have tried the control panel route. In the mouse box it only gives me the mouse preferences and says nothing about touchpad. I may have at sometime disable a toggle or deleted something that refers to the touch pad? maybe it is driver problems. I only have limited knowledge about computers. thank you responding to my ?.

John.
