When removing the charge cable from my ipad mini, the tip of the lightning connector has snapped off inside the ipad charging port. Took it to Apple who cannot get it out and say they can only replace the whole ipad for £250! Surely there is a way of removing it without having to replace the ipad? Any suggestions

I used a safety pin (bigger one, about 1.5"), and pushed the pointed pin at the side, pushing the latch that holds the connector on the side.
I just keep doing this on either side, and pull back again. One time after pushing it deep inside, when i pulled it, that side of the broken piece lifted up. So I knew it was possible.
kept doing this until one time the broken piece turned 90 deg. so then i was able to use a thin long nose and pull it out. The whole trial process took ~ 30 mins, with breaks in between. Good thing is since i did that on the sides only, the connector is still ok, and charging still. Just be patient. And yes, at times the pin would bend ...

Followed this suggestion and it worked. Only took about 5 mins. What I found helpful was removing the white plastic in the middle with the pin first and then pushing the metal pins from the front and back into the middle. Seemed to make the broken connector looser and more easily removed.
Try this before going near the super glue method.

The very tip of the charger (metal piece that runs along the top) broke off and got stuck in my daughters iPhone. I tried this tip and within 10 minutes it was out! I didn't even know it was working until I saw that piece of metal poking out from the opening. Then it popped right out. Amazing! thank you so much for posting this!!

Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this. I used a thumbtack and chiseled into the broken tip on both sides, wiggling back and forward and pushing deeper. Eventually, it popped out. I was shocked and relieved.

My son had done the first part. He had examined the tips of his two chargers. The new charger wouldnt charge but would go into the charging port. The original charger on the other hand would not go fully into the charging port. There was indeed something blocking the port.
I used a sewing neddle. I repeatedly poked/ pulled the neddle at both sides of the charging port until I could feel the piece start to move. Then it flipped side ways and was able to flick it out of the charging port .

Thanks to all of you for these suggestions. I tried them all with exception of superglue . In addition I also went to bestbuy, Apple, anda pc repair shop but nothing worked. I needed go find a tool that was thin but had ridges of some kind to have some kind of traction because using needles and safety pins did nothing bit scrape off metal. I tried some jewelry files until I found one that would fit in Rhee iPad slot and give me a little traction. It worked by letting me inche up the piece by alternating between the left and right sides in a flicking action until I actually flicke it out. Took me about 3 min.
Worked great fixed in under a minute
You all seriously saved my life on this one. It took 30 seconds with a glasses kit tool. One popped out. I was excited. Tried plugging it into a charger. Still didn’t work. Bummer. But wait. Could there be two charger ends stuck in there ? 10 more seconds with the glasses tool & yes a second one popped out

Mine got stuck too. What I did was I used nail clippers and pulled it right out. It’s the perfect fit for the charger!! Using the safety pin thing was actually quit difficult for me but this is perfect.

Now, I do not do reviews. They just aren't me. But I just wanna say that I spent an hour & a half going through each post someone did about how they got their piece out. I get to yours & I'm thinking "that's crazy, but let me try it" .... & BOOM ! in 3 seconds the piece out!! After I did all that burning & pushing & sticking... lol.

Thanks for the great tip! This was so easy, whereas I'd struggled for ages with a pin and smaller pliers for no effect. I was a bit nervous I might cut through the metal remaining, but I had no need to be concerned!

My daughter little metal piece broke off in her phone. I was !#^&@@ because she just got this phone for her bday and this phone was a huge upgrade from the phone she had! I used tweezers but I couldn’t grip the metal piece tight enough to where I could just pull it out. Tried it for like 45 minutes straight and was getting madder and madder! As soon as I used the nail clipper to grip the bottom like I wanted to, it popped right out. The phone is still in good condition and is charging just fine! I hope this works for others who has or have had the same issue!

Wow! The nail clippers worked in about 5 seconds! I freaked out when the charger broke because this is my work phone and I need it to authenticate when working remotely! Which is at least three days a week. Phew! Now all I need us a new cable from work :)

Had same problem with one of our children's ipad. We just got the pin you get with phones to access your sim card.,and both pieces flicked out. Problem solved.

My 5 year old suggested I use a staple remover thingy.
Gripped the metal piece inside my phone from the “sides” and the broken piece came out in one second. Kids and their creativity.

I tried the tweezers at first but didn’t work and then saw ifixit solution using nail clippers and wholla it works!ha The other idea I thought about was a magnet but thank goodness the nail clippers worked as didn’t have a magnet.lol
had the problem didnt know what happened untill reading post ... after comparing my chargers ... it was the tip stuck in the ipad port.....yep!!!!. used a extra small flathead....left to right pressure motion outwards was out in less than 30 seconds ....thanks for the post.... very helpful
I don't know if mine has the exact same problem as everybody else's here because I can not, for the life of me, see the little black thing in there anywhere still (that has broken off). I can't follow the process of everybody else's success story because I can't grab this thing to try & pull back into place... Just to clarify, its the little black centre/inner piece that you can see when looking into a working charger port. Mine is now just the outside metal housing, nothing (no more little black piece) which is obviously the connection to power to charge. It's a little Altec Lansing Life Jacket Bluetooth speaker, I've given it a good enough gentle shake.., nothing fell out & can't hear anything shaking loosely.

Took me way more than an hour before giving up. Took a magnifying glass and it clearly looked like I had done much more harm than good. Since I was sure I had ruined it anyway, I took the smallest eyeglass repair screwdriver and lightly tapped it down one of the sides, (end), and then pried it up. The piece became unlodged and I was able to pull it out with my fingers. There was such a debris field, I used an air gun to “clean out” the hole. Then the big miracle, I plugged it into a charger and it is now charging. Then I read the rest of the comments before posting this. If it happens again I think I would try mtnmedic’s thumbtack method posted 7/1/2023 before taking my drastic step!

Small safety pin, small screwdriver for middle work.
Then tweezers to pull out end piece. Large II pad that would sell for 1 k now so this forum/ tips really paid off.
Be patient and realize the small pieces are critical to get to the end clip that If notremoved won’t allow charge.

So I had this issue last night. Fell asleep and iPad dropped on floor, snapped the end of charger off inside the iPad port.
I have zero patience and I thought this was going to be a nightmare, but……
After reading everyone’s comments I grabbed a thin scribe type tool and a decent magnet. Seriously took less than 10sec to dislodge.
The broken piece was in as deep as it could possibly go, but all sorted and charging fine.

The tweezers, pin, etc, nothing worked after over an hour, I was in despair. Then I saw the comment about the unpicker. I think this worked as it gave me leaverage. My broken pieces was stuck deep with no protruding pieces and I wasn’t strong enough to get the pin down the we side. I’m so happy this worked. As others have set, be patient and be careful of those CONTACTS towards the back of the iPhone/ipad. Best to get leaverage from the sides, just to be safe.

I found a great way to "pick" out the broken charger tip. Take a large sewing needle and insert it in a coax cable straight union, $1.50 at Walmart and thread a cap on it. This gives you something to hold onto when picking out the broken tip. Took me about an hour but it eventually came out. Apple iPad was not repairable but we proved them wrong once again.

I put a bit of Crazy Glue on the cable side, put the tip and the cable together, waited for it to dry (like a minute or so), then pulled it out with no problems.

You can take the device to some third party trusted local service center. They can take the broken thing out from the device and fix the issue.

My husband used a very tiny bit in a battery powered drill and drilled in the middle of the piece stuck in the charging port then wriggled the tip back and forth. The piece came out immediately without any damage. Ellie Cardillo
