Mel, make sure that iTunes and the iOS Software is up to date. Then disconnect the phone. Do a hard reset by holding down the sleep/wake button, and home button, until the phone completely turns. Then re-connect the phone back to the computer and see if that resolves the issue. Also, check your dock connector and make sure that it is clean, no broken or bend pins. Try a different cable and/or a different USB port/computer. Hope this helps, good luck.
