iPhone 4 keeps searching for signal

Block Image

My iPhone 4 keeps "searching" for a network. And it doesn't register "No Sim" when I remove this sim. I've opened it up, but I'm not sure if the blue coil is damaged.

This problem can happen if you disconnect the battery or if the battery get disconnected by it. You can tell if this is what happened because the year will say 1970 or so. The best way to solve this is to connect to WiFi and sync to the correct time. Then, switch airplane mode on/off a few times, remove the SIM card, and power off your iPhone. Reinsert your SIM and that should do it! Good luck with that.

The coil looks okay, the symptom looks more like a baseband logic or hardware issue.

FYI this is the common procedure to resolve reception issues

If the phone is showing reception issues, try the following

Remove all external accessories to rule out 3rd party accessories that could block or even interfere with the signals

Test the reception on another known good identical phone to rule out coverage issues

Reboot/restore or upgrade the phone software to rule out potential software issues.

If none of the above works, there are probably hardware issues.

I've observed newly powered on iphones constantly display "searching" until the system clock is synchronized with apple servers and airplane mode is cycled. The baseband was stuck on wrong config data because the clock is off. reboot or just recycle the airplane mode should clear it out.

If it still doesn't work, go to settings-general-about to check the IMEI\baseband virsion\ICCID is abailable. Missing IMEI and version means that the baseband is not working, Having these but the ICCID is blank means that the SIM card is not linking with the phone. Both cases are difficult to repair

Thanks Tom. sadly when I have successfully restored the device to factory settings I get an itunes message 'There is a problem with your phone' which means there is a hardware fault. so now I don't have access to settings. phone is out of warranty and has been opened up so apple cant help there. my network carrier says there is no reason why it shouldn't activate..

I've ruled out the software issue

will try it in another identical phone tomorrow

thanks for your help so far

Thank You!!! That really helped

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Love Tom's answer--just wanted to add that it is very easy to coincidentally knock off baseband components when prying up the battery on the logic board side. I bet if you look under magnification you can pinpoint the missing components.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Thanks Jess...will look for any missing components

Hi Jess, I am your fan! I am very amateur fixing phone yet, since I am trying to fix iphones, you have been my best ever teacher. I am from Brazil and have learned a lot from your youtube videos. BTW, I did a mistake of prying up the battery, and an very very small IC was knocked off the board. I do not have yet the skills for micro soldering and my doubt is: 1) it seems the IC who came off is intact. If so, just resoldering it would fix the problem? 2) Can I pick the same IC from an older iphone and if I am successful to sold it, it would probably fix the problem? Or do I need to change many baseband componets to get the IMEI and Version number back on the GENERAL>etc?

Hello everybody- This thing can happend when you open your iPhone 4S, change the LCD screen or change battery. For me- as I work with iphones the solution what has helped me is simple- first of all go to settins- reset- reset network settings.. Your phone then resets all network settings and 90% of the time your signal comes back as it was! :) Remember that resetting all network settings will delete your wifi passwords as well- so you need to connect again in every place you have joined wifi. Hope this will help many iPhone owners! :)

crwdns2934285:0crwdne2934285:0

Oh ok.

Then next to the blue coil there should be white coil

Is that one in its place

Also conect the iphone to itunes that also sometimes gets it back up n runing

Also check the signal antena there little silver pins that go between the loud speaker and the frame if they r broken ur signal is weak

I had the same problem , I took the Iphone 4 to a recognized technician and he fixed the problem , it was a hardware problem, the part of the Iphone responsable for reception and transmiting I think it is the antenna and the technician replaced it and now the Iphone 4 is working smoothly.
